PUBH 2301 - Health Law and Policy

This course provides the student with a deep dive into Health Law, inclusive of the characteristics and structure of the U.S.
health care delivery system and comparison to other health systems. Aspects of public health policy, laws, ethics, and
economics will be examined. Upon completion of the course, students are expected to demonstrate an understanding of the
key elements of the health care industry as it pertains to medical care and public health, including an understanding of the roles
of health care providers (inclusive of HIPPA), public and private payers, the role of government, and challenges facing health
care systems. Students will also cover the importance of health policy as an effective tool to improve health, historical public
health successes in the U.S. as a result of legal or policy interventions (e.g., smoke-free air laws, seatbelt laws, etc.), the
necessity for Healthy People 2030, U.S. Surgeon General Reports, and other vital public health strategic plans and resources.
Students will also examine the social component of health law and policy in the light of COVID-19 (e.g., vaccine mandates, mis-
dis-information, etc.), learn basic policy analysis skills, identify current community issues and explore/design a public health
policy to address the community issue.
Required for Healthcare Administration & Management and Public Health majors
